Music and stage department
The Department for Music and Stage Activities of the Public Open University Poreč deals with the Poreč scene – theatre, film and music – and within the sphere of cultural activities contributes to shaping the city by providing opportunities for interactions, expressing creativity and innovation, and fulfilling the need for creation.
Since culture exists only when performed, the Music and Stage Department organizes, carries out and reflects on events and festivals whose themes and performances encompass and unite local tradition, world classics and contemporary artistic tendencies. Using the power of festivals to connect the community, encouraging activity and creativity, it strives to discover and showcase the work of local and recognized artists and enrich the local scene through cooperation with other European and global performers.
The range of programs and festivals extends to various artistic forms and genres – theatre and dance performances during the year-round theatre season accompanied by the comedy and laughter festival Zlatni zub, traditional singing and composing at the Naš kanat je lip Choir Meeting, classical Concerts in the Euphrasian Basilica, the festival Jazz in the Lapidarium, the street art festival Street art Poreč, the international documentary film festival Porečdox, the regular cinema program, and a selection of the world’s best films brought to the Poreč screen by the Oscar Review. More recent programs include Tornaj se doma – Torna casa and the Ekolo festival, which celebrate the identity and culture of the space and community.
Throughout the entire year, the Department designs and offers high-quality content to the Poreč audience and the city’s visitors, with the goal of providing a top artistic experience within a positive and dynamic urban atmosphere. Through these programs, the city gradually comes to life, gaining a constant, year-round urban rhythm. In addition to preserving tradition and encouraging new creativity, the diverse events aim to connect the residents of Poreč as well as those from the entire Istrian region. The vision is for residents from across the region to gravitate toward Poreč as a cultural center, which, in addition to program implementation, is gradually achieved through continual education and audience development.
The city offers several active and attractive stages depending on the type of festival, the kind of performance and the time of year – the stage of the Poreč theatre and cinema, the historically, artistically and acoustically invaluable space of the Euphrasian Basilica and the Istrian Assembly Hall, as well as the picturesque city lapidarium. Poreč also offers other areas as potential stages, suitable for showcasing street art and holding outdoor events.
The theatre season offers guest performances, both drama and dance, and the theatre is filled with special enthusiasm by performances for the youngest audience and their parents. Each year, more and more titles are performed on the theatre stage thanks to great audience interest.
