The concert season of the Public Open University Poreč begins with the traditional Naš kanat je lip Choir Meeting in the Istrian Assembly Hall at the beginning of June. Since 1973, this meeting has preserved and promoted one of the most valuable Istrian intangible treasures, protected by UNESCO – the Istrian musical scale. Named after the composition by Ivan Matetić Ronjgov, Kanat brings together choirs and composers whose work is rooted in the Istrian scale and the Chakavian language.
Naš kanat je lip is more than a meeting; it encourages further engagement with and experimentation on the Istrian scale, which represents a special interest and challenge for composers around the world. In addition to well-known compositions, choirs introduce premieres every year. Alongside the Meeting, a special collection of compositions is published and promoted, remaining as the permanent legacy of the event. For decades, at the beginning of summer, Poreč has been resonating with choral singing and reminding us of the importance of preserving and developing tradition in a contemporary environment.
The longevity of this event is clear proof of the strength and significance of the Istrian musical idiom, and the enthusiasm of the choirs, their conductors and composers fills the Istrian Assembly Hall every year with the sounds of our region, unique in the world.
