Kad-tad is a playful play that leans toward comedy while questioning the notion of synchronicity and the inexplicable coincidences we witness in life.
The play premiered on 29 March 2021 at the Poreč Theatre, had four additional performances, and was revived in 2023, when it was also hosted at the Istrian National Theatre – City Theatre Pula.
The story about the connection and possible falling in love of Hella Rupenska and Artur Kralj follows a typical day in their lives. It is the day when the two of them, quite by chance, meet at a tram stop while waiting for the seven, the last tram before the night lines and the beginning of a new day.
Hella is a professor who explores the concept of evil through literature and writes an autobiographical novel that will never be published. Artur is a successful actor in an identity crisis, which is reflected in his meandering among all the characters he has played in his rich career. The third character is the radio host of Sinkro, who, like an all-knowing narrator of a magical radio, comments on events and gives impulses for the further development of the story.
Through the story of their encounter we get a voyeuristic insight into the intimacy and everyday life of each protagonist. We follow their preoccupations, desires, fears, catharses. Although they share the stage, they both live alone – they do not see each other, but they still feel the presence of the other. Are these signs that lead to a fateful meeting? Perhaps they are, or perhaps they are just coincidences.
Everything intertwines in what at first glance seems like a casual conversation between two strangers. Will they fall in love, recognise the signs? Or will they postpone love for some other occasion?
The title of the play underlines the idea that we live in cycles of coincidences, that things we fail to complete and resolve return to us, probably in a different context and with a new face.
The search for hidden patterns that influence our actions is one of the ideas that makes this play recognisable to everyone, but also intriguing. The authors’ wish is to tell a serious story through laughter and to learn more about themselves, and to offer the same opportunity to the audience.
