The Mixed Choir Joakim Rakovac was founded in 1979. The past decades have been filled with the dedication and enthusiasm of hundreds of members who have invested their vocal abilities and love of song into achieving notable results. The core of the choir is made up of singers from its early years, to whom many new members have joined over time. The Choir has been, and remains, the backbone of musical amateurism in the city of Poreč.
Over the course of its activity, the Choir has performed successfully on many stages throughout Istria, Croatia and abroad. Notable performances include those in Salzburg, Hungary (Pécs and Siófok), Italy (Massa Lombarda – several times, Milan, Clusone, Tirano, Lucinico), Austria (Lechaschau, Vienna), Slovakia (Topoľčany, Bratislava), the Czech Republic (Brno) as well as in Koper, Portorož, Negotin, Zadar and Piran.
Equally important are the frequent performances at the choral meeting Naš kanat je lip in Poreč, where they have also presented several premieres.
The Choir’s repertoire is extensive and varied, including traditional Istrian folk songs (kante), Dalmatian klapa songs, and works by Croatian and international composers from all musical-historical periods, both sacred and secular.
Since 1997 the Choir has been operating under the Public Open University Poreč. Its long-standing conductor was Mr. Ante Cukrov, and since 2006 the choir has been led by Mrs. Đeni Dekleva Radaković. Around 35 members of all ages are currently involved in the Choir’s work, meeting regularly twice a week, and more often before performances.
