The Styrian photography biennial photo graz has been continuously dedicated since 2006 to presenting the current photographic scene in Graz and Styria. With the participation of more than 150 photographers, the edition photo graz 024offered a layered and representative overview of this scene, while photo graz selection VI brings together 25 artistic positions that testify to its vitality, contemporaneity, and diversity.
Graz, the second largest city in Austria, has developed since the 1950s into an important center for the production and critical reflection of progressive photography. This tradition continues today and forms the foundation of the breadth and diversity of the contemporary photographic scene in Styria.
Between the oldest (born in 1940) and the youngest (born in 2005) artist featured in this exhibition, a span of 65 years unfolds. During this period, not only have the technical conditions of photography evolved, but social and geopolitical processes have also opened new thematic horizons within artistic discourse. Art has always assumed the role of analyzing time and society—critically, and at times playfully—artists address contemporary phenomena, expose systemic weaknesses, and question dominant patterns and ways of life.
The thematic scope of the exhibition unfolds within the tension between intimacy and the public sphere. The image of the human being, in its various manifestations—from self-presentation and ideals to representations of the female body—is explored in relation to social media and the contexts that shape it. Within this framework, a wide range of current socio-political and cultural topics are addressed, including media, migration, climate change, folk cultures, and gender issues.
Techniques from the early phases of photography—camera obscura, photogram, solarigraphy, and stereoscopy—intersect with the latest technological approaches, including AI-generated images. This selection of works by Styrian artists offers an opportunity to reflect on one’s own position within the diversity of approaches and intellectual currents shaping the photographic medium today.
