“POREČKI DELFINI” – CHILDREN'S WIND ORCHESTRA
The children’s wind orchestra called “Porečki delfini” (“The Poreč Dolphins”) has been active within the Poreč Public Open College since 1992.
A small number of young beginners learned their first music notes at the classroom of the Open College. The instruments were bigger then them and very heavy at that, especially when trying to create the starting sound. These young musicians developed through persistence and enthusiasm. Their trumpets, saxophones, clarinets and percussions became their inseparable friends; they grew side by side.
Year after year there were more and more young participants who found pleasure in spending time enjoying music, developing a different way of perceiving life and a better way of spending their free time. The orchestra eventually grew in importance, found a place in the cultural life of the town and was fully affirmed. It is the only orchestra in Croatia that does not belong to a regular school. It takes a great effort and dedication to achieve such noticeable results.
The orchestra mostly performs in the town of Poreč participating at numerous festivities. They also organize individual performances and performances in cooperation with the choir of the Poreč Elementary School. The orchestra performed in various towns across Croatia and was invited to perform in foreign countries as well. Still, their most important performances are regular appearances at the Festival of Brass Music of Istria where they are the youngest participants, and also the ones attracting the most attention. Their endearing concert performances at the tourist facilities are unforgettable; the orchestra often contributes to our tourist offer. During all these years the program concentrated on teaching young musicians to play wind instruments and some other as well:
• Flute, clarinet, saxophone,
• Trumpet, trombone, tenor, horns, bass tube,
• Percussions,
• Guitar and bass guitar.
Enrolment period lasts throughout the school year.
Course price: 100 HRK per month.

THE BIG BAND
The Big Band, the jazz orchestra of the Poreč Public Open College, was established in October 2001.
The orchestra gathers 20 music enthusiasts – lovers of evergreen and jazz music.
In addition to adult members, the orchestra includes young members of the orchestra called “Porečki delfini” (The Poreč Dolphins) who gladly continue their career in music in the Big Band.
• The rehearsals are held twice a week at the facilities of the Open College.
DRAMA WORKSHOP
The drama workshop organized by the Poreč Public Open College has been active since 1995. The participants gather around the carefully selected projects. At the moment, the workshop gathers 22 participants because the current project, Oletta by Mrkušić, is quite complicated. The first three acts of the play are scheduled to be performed as separate performances at the end of November. The rest of the acts will be prepared at some later time. During the winter period, when the theater building is to be renovated, the group will study and perform a chamber play, most probably a play called “Bez trećega” (“Without the Third”) by Begović. The play is scheduled to be performed at the existing facilities.
We have realized 6 big projects so far. During the summer the plays were performed on open-air spaces, whereas during the winter season they were performed in the theater. The performance that drew the most attention from the audience was last year’s performance featuring a story related to Poreč called “Apoteoza” (“The Apotheosis”) by Mrkušić. It was performed 6 times in Poreč. Special guest performances were given for the Croatian minority in Hungary in Pecz and Olasz.
THE JOAKIM RAKOVAC MIXED CHOIR OF THE POREČ PUBLIC OPEN COLLEGE
The Joakim Rakovac Mixed Choir was founded in 1979. It will mark the 25th year of activity next year. During the last quarter of a century, through generous contributions and enthusiasm of hundreds of members who have joined the choir and showed their love for music, the choir was the leading entity within the scope of amateur music activities in the town. The choir also performed across Istria, Croatia and abroad. It performed in several European countries as well. One of the most significant guest performances must have been the one in Mozart’s Salzburg or the one in Pecz or one of the numerous performances in ancient Osor organized as a reward to the singers for a full year’s work. The spontaneous applauses of the endeared yet very demanding Zadar audience have once again testified to the true value of this collective. The repertory of the choir is comprehensive: from folk Istrian melodies and traditional Dalmatian songs sung by klape, to the works of domestic and international authors from all periods of music history, of both sacral and secular character.
Since 1997 the choir has been active as part of the Poreč Public Open College. The choir is mostly comprised of experienced singers active from the time the choir was organized but now it also includes some new members who have joined more recently. The choir gathers 40 members of all ages; they meet twice a week, even more often if necessary. Their plans are very ambitious, especially the one for the upcoming anniversary year. The choir is scheduled to perform in Poreč, the towns across Istria and the towns, friends of Poreč, in Croatia and abroad. Join them!
• The enrollment of new members is carried out on Mondays and Thursdays between 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm at the former Roxy Bar behind the building.
